Pet peeve

ESOTERICA

The Boston Globe discusses one of mine. (I cite this at the risk of sounding like an old fart.)

Is your concern only in the service setting described or in all contexts?

old fart!

maybe it's a generational thing or a personal thing, but to me 'you're welcome' vs. 'no problem' is the opposite of the case made in the article. 'you're welcome' implies that you just did something really nice for someone (making it more narcissistic) while 'no problem' is to downplay that you don't really need to thank me as it was no big deal.
